Grand Canyon USA: Why people are dying at the Grand Canyon? 15 people have died this year at the iconic place



Grand Canyon has so far recorded its 15th death in 2024 and the National Park Service and the Office of the Coconino County Medical Examiner are continuing their investigation behind the reason of this deaths, said the National Park Service (NPS).

A disruptive summer at the World Heritage Site Grand Canyon National Park recording huge amount of mortalities.

In the month of August only, the National Park faced six deaths where three people died during the primary week of that month alone. The untimely deaths included a base jump gone wrong which was illegal and a flash flood sweeping away a woman.

Staring from 2020, the mortality count was at 13, whereas it hugely surged during the year 2021 with a figure of 23. Eventually, it came down to 12 in 2022 and the count decreased one less in the upcoming year. According to the park officials, the average rate of deaths tallies approximately between 10 to 15 for a calendar year but 2021 was an exception.

Sudden demise of Patrick Horton on a river trip

On July 31, the dead body of a man named Patrick Horton was found at poncho’s kitchen which is a significant part of the Grand Canyon located at the 137th mile adjacent to the Colorado river. The concerned authorities revealed the news saying that they received an early morning phone call on Sunday, reporting Horton’s death during a group river trip. In an official news release, the park authorities asserted that other member of his party found his body on the 10th day of the expedition and he was visiting the park on a basis of non-commercial river trip.

The average toll of deaths is around 358 each year which were being reported all across the national parks throughout the United States, where the Grand Canyon National Park stands at the lower end of the list.

Throughout a stretch of 5 years, starting from 2014 to 2019, a NPS data revealed that 103 people died at the park, among which medical emergencies recorded 49 deaths and 37 deaths never involved any physical activity.
