The series, which premiered under Hulu’s Onyx Collective banner, was known for its strong focus on stories by creators of color and other underrepresented groups, as mentioned in a report by Decider.
Washington, reflecting on the series’ abrupt conclusion, stated, “This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3. But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful.”

UnPrisoned was a deeply personal project for all involved, especially for its creators and cast.
Inspired by the life of creator Tracy McMillan, the show centered on Paige Alexander, played by Washington, a relationship therapist and single mother whose life takes a turn when her father, Edwin Alexander (Delroy Lindo), is released from prison and moves in with her and her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana).
Kerry Washington further noted that creating the show was a “labor of love” and that she felt privileged to have worked with such an extraordinary team. “We know that so many of you found connection and healing with The Alexander Family – and that their impact will live on! We are soooooo grateful to the entire cast & crew – who are not only brilliant and hardworking, but a JOY to work with!”
The Legacy of ‘UnPrisoned’
Despite its cancellation, UnPrisoned resonated deeply with its audience. The show’s exploration of family dynamics, personal growth, and the challenges of reintegration after incarceration was hailed for its authenticity and emotional depth. The bond between Paige and Edwin became a focal point of the show, touching viewers with its raw portrayal of familial love and tension.
The second season ended on a hopeful yet uncertain note, leaving many wondering about the direction of a potential third season. Tracy McMillan had hinted that the future storyline would explore the complexities of Paige’s relationship with her mother, but this remains unexplored with the series now officially ending, as per a report by Decider.
No Plans for Continuation
As of now, neither McMillan nor the show’s other producers have commented on the possibility of UnPrisoned being picked up by another network or streaming platform.
Hulu and Onyx Collective have not released statements beyond the cancellation. McMillan, who served as both the show’s creator and an executive producer, has been silent about the show’s end, and there is no indication the series will be shopped elsewhere.
