SU alum Billie Owens, daughter of Syracuse basketball legend, wins Miss Pennsylvania USA
Syracuse University alumna Billie LaRaé Owens has been crowned Miss Pennsylvania USA.
Owens, the daughter of Syracuse basketball legend Billy Owens, won the Miss Pennsylvania 2022 pageant over the weekend and will represent the Keystone State in the upcoming Miss USA competition.
“I’M SPEECHLESS! Words can not describe how honored I am to be your new #MissPAUSA 2022 👑 You ready, Pennsylvania? Let’s do this!” she wrote on Miss PA USA’s official Instagram page.
Billie Owens ran on a platform of female empowerment as an official ambassador for HoopHers, a girls empowerment program for Philadelphia Youth Basketball. She succeeds Miss Pennsylvania 2021 champ Sydney Robertson, beating out runners-up Ebone-Marie Jimerson and Tristin Kresak for this year’s crown on Sunday at the Richland Performing Arts Center in Johnstown, Penn.
Owens is a model who reportedly walked in the New York Bridal Fashion Week show for Lé Lauriér by Lauren Holovka, and also works as a reporter for the Connect Network. She graduated from SU’s Newhouse School in 2018 with a B.A. in broadcast journalism.
Her father, Billy Owens, played hoops at Syracuse from 1988 to 1991. In just three seasons, he scored 1,840 points and grabbed 910 rebounds, ranking 12th on SU’s all-time scoring list and ninth for rebounding. He was a consensus All-American and the Big East’s Player of the Year in 1991, and had his No. 30 jersey retired by the Orange.
Owens was selected third overall in the 1991 NBA Draft and spent ten years in the league, including with the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Sacramento Kings, Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Detroit Pistons. He also won a bronze medal for the U.S. national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship.
Owens’ son Chaz Owens, Billie’s younger brother, played forward on the SU men’s basketball team the past two seasons.
The Miss USA 2022 pageant will be held this fall. The winner will go on to compete for Miss Universe.
