Narcotics investigation: A Ridge Avenue resident was taken into custody Thursday after detectives with the Jefferson County Drug Task Force seized what they believe to be heroin and two guns, one of them an assault rifle. Anthony M. Sims, 36, 1416 Ridge Ave., was charged with one count of drug possession and possession of a weapon as a convicted felon, officials said. Detectives reported seizing 28 grams of suspected heroin, a firearm and the assault rifle, with high-capacity magazines.
Family feud: A woman who hadn’t had contact with her sister for a while because of a prior alleged domestic violence incident told police that same sister is holding her Social Security card hostage, Thursday. She told police her sister is demanding $80 in exchange for the card, and said her sister also changed the information on her food card and now she can’t get groceries for her children.
Charged: A woman was taken into custody on drug violations and a warrant following a traffic stop in the 2100 block of Sunset Boulevard, Thursday. Police said Danielle R. Ortman, 29, 1333 Ridge Ave., Steubenville, was charged with two counts of possession of drugs (one felony, one misdemeanor), possession of drug paraphernalia and a warrant for failure to appear. Police said they found a glass pipe, along with a white granule substance believed to be crack cocaine and a subutex in her pocket.
Sad: Police were asked to check on the welfare of a Lawson Avenue resident whose house had no heat or running water, Thursday. The homeowner told police the thermostat wasn’t working properly, and the water was off because she couldn’t afford to pay the bill.
Sadder: A man was sitting in the 200 block of Shirley Circle with his lights on, Thursday. He told police he’s been staying at the church off and on and was waiting for it to open.
Food fight: Callers reported two people in the 700 block of North Seventh Street causing a disturbance, Thursday. Officers standing outside their door could hear them screaming at each other. They told police they were arguing over cake.
Something’s missing: A Wintersville woman who left her wallet in a basket at Lowe’s said it was turned into lost and found, minus $600 in cash she’d had in it, Thursday.
Stuck: A driver ran out of gas and money at a gas pump downtown, Thursday. After four hours employees were ready for him to be gone and said he was “giving them a hard time about it” because he was out of gas and was waiting for a friend to bring him money or his check to be deposited. Police said a friend finally showed up and gave him money for gas.
Shattered: The owner of a business in the 200 block of South Fourth Street told police someone broke a window there overnight, Thursday.
Long distance venom: A city resident told police she’s getting threatening messages from a woman in North Carolina, Thursday. She said the woman is threatening to come to Steubenville and assault her.

Wary: The father of a youth removed from his family home because of unsanitary and unsafe conditions was warned to steer clear of the teen and his temporary guardian pending the outcome of his children’s services case, Wednesday. The father was released from jail on an unrelated warrant about the time the youth and his temporary guardian started receiving strange phone calls, deputies said. They were called back to the residence because the father had shown up. He said he was “trying to visit his kid.” Deputies told him if he returned to the property he would be arrested.
Recovered: A Mossberg pump-action .12-gauge shotgun reported stolen more than a decade ago was recovered in Wheeling, Wednesday. Police said it had been pawned in Wheeling. It’s been returned to the owner.
Cutting corners: Two Toronto-area residents told deputies they’re having trouble with individuals cutting through their property to access a neighbor’s property who allows them to hunt, Thursday. One of the property owners said it’s been going on for 15 years and both of them said they’ve asked the hunters by phone and in person to stop. They said the individuals have permission to hunt deer on a particular section of the third neighbor’s property and insist on using their driveway, marked no trespassing, to get to it.
Drove away: An Irondale man said he let his ex spend the night at his place and when he returned from work she was gone, along with his 2005 Chrystler Town and Country minivan, Thursday. He said he texted her about his van she told him she was in Lisbon and wasn’t going to return it. He said at the time he wanted to pursue charges and would e-mail deputies a copy of the title and the text messages but never did.
Ratchet up: A Pennsylvania man told deputies he was driving on state Route 43 when a truck in front of him turned east onto county Road 43 and an object flew out of the utility bed, “striking his windshield and penetrating it into the cab of his truck,” Thursday. Deputies said an errant socket shattered the driver’s side windshield, leaving “a large hole and the window … shattered.” There were no injuries.
