‘Music On State’ Bringing Free Outdoor Music To Newtown

NEWTOWN BOROUGH — “Music on State Street,” a series of free summer outdoor musical performances, kicks off on Tuesday, July 12 on historic State Street in Newtown with a performance by singing guitarist Anders Hyatt.

Beginning at 6 p.m., Hyatt, an accomplished finger-style guitar player, will perform popular songs from the 60s to today. He plays at weddings, private parties, corporate events, wineries, restaurants, and bars. And he regularly appears at the Temperance House.

Music on State continues every Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. through the end of August in front of Opus Elite Real Estate at 16 South State Street (across from the Temperance House).

The series continues on July 19 with music by the Faraway Guys, another regular at the Temp.

The Faraway Guys have been playing together for years and are party favorites at local brewpubs and other area venues in Pennsylvania and New Jersey playing classic and alternative rock, even sprinkled with originals on occasion.

Their name – rooted in the band’s love of the Rolling Stones – is a veiled reference to the song, “Faraway Eyes.”Mixing up the set lists, they also rock n roll like Tom Petty or The Who, but can just as easily jam it out like the Allman Brothers or the Grateful Dead.

On Tuesday, July 26 everyone’s favorite local children’s musician and guitarist Meg Russell of Newtown brings her talent to Music on State.

Russell began performing in 2009 while on maternity leave from her position as a special education teacher. She began performing at parties and then started writing her own children’s music.

She released her first album, “Juggling,” with six songs on it about her experience being a parent. Her next two albums, “Hat Parade” and “Puzzle,” received Parent’s Choice Awards. She released her most recent album, “Street Signs,” in 2021.

The series continues with the Kate and Bob Duo on August 2, Matt Dorsey (acoustic rock) on August 9, Craig Lieboff (singer/guitarist) on August 16, band to be announced on August 23 and Cara Cartney on August 30.

Originally from Tennessee, Dorsey has a family line and a history of music rooting from the Carter Family (June Carter). Matt and his wife, Camille, moved to Newtown in 2011.

Lieboff is an established singer/guitarist based out of Hopewell Township, N.J. He plays weddings, clubs and private parties across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York and performs a wide range of music from Ray Charles to Prince, Jack Johnson, Zak Brown, Bruno Mars and the Foo Fighters.

Known for her deep, often sultry, and emotional voice Cara Cartney can move an audience with a classic crooning ballad or make them sing and dance while playing modern hip-hop, all the while making the songs innately “hers”. McCartney’s song list is as eclectic as they come, ranging from the 1940s to the 2000s, including Neil Young, The Beatles, to today’s top Pop and R&B jams.

The free summer music series is presented by the Newtown Historical Association and the Newtown Experience Committee.
